Smith Construction win £1.75m project at Winchester University

Smith Construction has secured a prestigious design and build project worth £1.75m for new sports facilities at Winchester University. The first-class development will provide the university and community with an Olympic standard 8-lane athletic arena with all field event facilities and a full-sized all-weather sand dressed hockey and multi use pitch with floodlighting.

Smith Construction’s team have started on site and it is expected the Synthetic Grass Pitch will be completed before Christmas with the Athletic Track ready for spring 2008.

The design has taken in to account the difficult ground conditions, weathered chalk being the main problem. The area is to be cut and filled to form the level formation and the land will then be strengthened by stabilisation in layers, a technique which reduces environmental impact, and which is relatively new to the sports industry.

The £1.75m project, funded by Winchester City Council, The University and Sport England is one of the largest sports surface installation contracts Smith’s have won. Others include the Thomas Parmiter Sports Centre, Watford, for £1.34m and earlier this year, the Ruston Marconi Sports Centre, Lincoln, for £1.4m.

Chris Higgins, Director of Estates for Winchester University said “We had no previous experience of commissioning an athletics track or an all weather pitch, and went through a very careful selection process with pre tender interviews.
