Smith Construction have completed a very important sporting project at the all new Hoe Valley School, Woking.
The new Hoe Valley School will provide its pupils and local community with outstanding sports and leisure facilities, to be known locally as the Woking Sportsbox.
The spectacular three-story school built for 840 pupils, complete with fully equipped science labs, specialist teaching facilities for music, drama, art and technology, a library and much more has been developed on the 22-acre site by Willmott Dixon.
Smith Construction have built and installed the sports facilities which include an eight-lane, 400m athletics track to meet the International Association of Athletics Federations Competition Standards, with field event facilities comprising triple jump, long jump, pole vault, javelin, hammer and discus throws circles and cages.
New natural grass sports pitches were also installed, along with the design and construction of three small-sided 3G football turf pitches and porous macadam MUGA’s for tennis and netball.
Due to uneven and sloping ground on site where the athletics track was to be built, Smith Construction’s civil engineering background was essential. To create a strong, flat and stable sub –base and formation for the athletics track to be built upon, it was necessary for a large amount of fill material to be brought into the area to make up levels. The fill material was installed in many stabilised and compacted layers to achieve the required finished surface result. The design of the track incorporated reinforced retaining walls on the spectator stand and school building side. The surface of the main track is a polymeric sandwich system suitable for national and international standard athletics.
All of the sports facilities have been finished to a high standard and the natural grass pitches have become established.
Smith Construction’s Managing Director, Ken Smith, commented “It has been a pleasure to provide Hoe Valley School with their new sports facilities and I hope they are as delighted with them as we are. It’s always satisfying to work on a project that requires more than your average groundworks, and we have thoroughly enjoyed getting our teeth stuck into this project, right from the offset, through to completion.”
