Smith Construction (Heckington) Ltd, a specialist design and engineering company, recognised nationally in the sports surface construction industry, and International Distributers and UK Manufacturer, Tiger Turf UK Ltd have been appointed by Nottingham Forest Football Academy, to upgrade their indoor training area to meet FIFA 1* standards.
The Nottingham Forest Grounds Team wanted a local contractor, with the skills and experience to ensure the project ran smoothly, to be able to work to strict timescales, and the expertise from the manufacturer to provide a high performance product with on-going maintenance and support.
Smith Construction are used to working under strict conditions, and have recently constructed the Olympic Warm-up Track and athlete drop off area adjacent to the main stadium, for The London 2012 Olympics Games. The project was completed on time, and adhering to tight deadlines.
Life-Long Supporters, Robert Swatton, Projects Manager for Smith Construction and Nick Rickerby, Business Development Manager for Tiger Turf, collaborated to oversee the project, ensuring it was completed on time, to meet the needs of the Football Academy. The prestigious project was completed during February half-term to ensure minimum disruption.
The old surface was removed using specialist carpet lifting equipment, to allow Smith Construction to prepare the existing dynamic base before laying the new Tiger Turf Soccer Real 60XQ synthetic carpet.
Nottingham Forest Football Academy selected Tiger Turf’s third generation product, Soccer Real 60XQ; the yarn of which has been developed exclusively for Tiger Turf by Dutch Company, Tencate, Tiger Turf’s parent company. The product has been designed to meet the latest FIFA standards, and is used widely by clubs and community alike. This high performance, intelligent product has built-in vertical memory, so even after heavy use, the grass remains upright. The soft, natural looking, dense turf has a highly consistent finish, allowing improved ball control that is comparable to play on natural grass.
Tiger Turf’s Business Development Manager, Nick Rickerby, says ‘We are delighted to be working with Nottingham Forest and believe that in order to nurture the next generation of professional footballers, a high performance pitch is essential. Each club’s needs are different, but what must be consistent is the quality of the artificial turf supplied. All of our football turf is FIFA approved and we can guarantee that it will not only last a minimum of 20,000 playing hours, but promises the longevity of performance.’Robert Swatton, Projects Manager for Smith Construction says, ‘Smith Construction were delighted to have been appointed the contract, and working with Nottingham Forest was a pleasure. We are delighted the pitch has been well received by both the academy and players. We hope this project is another positive change for the future of Nottingham Forest.
