St John’s School is situated on the edge of Leatherhead, in the Mole Valley district of Surrey, in around 50 acres of grounds, dominated by late Victorian Gothic buildings. St John’s School is an independent school currently offering a day and boarding service to just over 600 pupils.
After a successful competitive tendering process, Smith Construction was awarded the design and build contract to provide state of the art sports facilities for the school. The contract was awarded to Smith Construction due to their 30 years experience in the industry and their in-house engineering capabilities.
The re-development of the facilities is well underway; work commenced on site at the beginning of November and work is expected to take around 20 weeks, with expected completion being around the end of March.
The project is to design and construct a full size sand dressed hockey pitch to meet FIH specifications, a multi-use games area, car park and a toilet and store building. The surface chosen by the school was Tiger Turf’s Evo Pro; a premium FIH tested, sand dressed polyethylene monofilament surface. The multi-use games area is to be tarmacadam, to provide the school with two netball courts.
Smith Construction had to work closely with the local planning department to be able to discharge numerous planning conditions. Smith Construction funded a state of the art notice board to allow communication between all parties including local neighbours throughout the duration of the contract. Smith Construction’s company director, Ken Smith, has been heavily involved in this project, providing the design for the pitches, along with the technical calculations for the sites sustainable drainage scheme.
