In April 2014, Limonta Smith JV Ltd (a joint venture partnership between Smith Construction (Heckington) Ltd and Limonta Sport) constructed a full sized 3G sports facility at Nottingham Trent University. Nottingham Trent’s Head of Rugby, Neil Fowkes, expresses the positive benefits of the 3G rugby pitch constructed by Limonta Smith. He states:
“We have observed certain advantages since having the 3G pitch constructed by Limonta Smith. We have noticed a more stable set-piece, more scrums and mauls stay up, reducing injuries. Therefore training sessions don’t need to take as long reducing muscle exhaustion and decreasing the chance of unwanted injuries before a match.
When the surface is wet it doesn’t puddle because of the special drainage holes in the turf itself, the porous base and built in drainage system. This allows players to stay on their feet more easily than in similar weather conditions on a grass pitches.
When in play the ball is less likely to be influenced by surface debris after contact with the ground, as the 3G doesn’t become muddy like a natural pitch the ball only gets wet not muddy. No mud on the pitch also keeps line marking visible, this helps both the officials and players.
All of these benefits accelerates the speed of the game and maximises the quality of the game for both player and spectators.”
