Smith Construction was delighted to have been awarded the design and build contract at Ashbourne Tennis Club, Derbyshire, to construct three porous, colour-coated macadam tennis courts, with the associated ground works, floodlighting and fencing.
The official open day was held on Saturday 18th May and despite the cold and windy weather, around 250 local tennis enthusiasts attended the event. The courts were officially opened by LTA President Peter Bretherton. Peter was joined by club chairman Cyril Challinor to perform the official ribbon cutting to mark the opening of the new facilities.
The new facilities were funded by a grant of £50,000 from Sport England’s ‘Inspired Facilities’ fund and the LTA heavily contributed by donating £112,000. The new facilities have been well received by all members and have also attracted over 30 new members in the last couple of weeks.
The official opening was followed by an exhibition match involving several of the club’s top players such as former junior world-ranked Mat Lowe, local coach and GB Veteran Ashley Broomhead and 14&U GB player Sam Ferguson. A number of top juniors from the club also joined in the exhibition match.
LTA Tennis Development Manager for Derbyshire and Leicestershire, Peter Sheard, commented ‘It’s great to see the new facilities at Ashbourne open. The club does a tremendous job with its junior coaching programme, introducing new players to the sport of tennis. I’m sure the club will continue to go from strength and strength and attract new players to the game.’
