Smith Construction has completed the new water-based hockey pitch at Malvern College. Work began in July 2016.
Malvern College is a leading independent, co-educational boarding and day school situated on the lower slopes of the beautiful Malvern Hills. The College provides education for pupils aged between thirteen and eighteen and offers a wide and varied range of co-curricular activities with considerable success in hockey.
This new water based hockey pitch has complemented and enhanced Malvern College’s already extensive range of excellent sports facilities. These include outstanding cricket grounds, an all-weather pitch, tournament quality rackets courts, tennis courts and a large number of natural playing fields, as well as a state-of-the-art sports complex which incorporates a climbing wall, double sports hall, squash courts, shooting range, swimming pool and fitness suite.
To prepare the surface of the water-based pitch, Smith Construction cut, filled and stabilised the ground and laid drainage within the structure. As the new pitch has been constructed next to an existing all-weather pitch, Smith Construction connected the pitches by constructing a spectator and warm up area, between the two.
Smith Construction have installed TigerTurf’s Wett Pro 13, a synthetic carpet which has been tested to FIH National Standards. This grain free, shorter, denser carpet supports itself during play, however, requires a layer of water to protect the fibres from rubbing together and overheating. The hockey pitch is coloured light green to the principal playing area and a darker green to the surrounds.
Malvern College can now boast a new, sleek, high-performance hockey pitch, which can be played on rain or shine, all year round.
