Smiths Invest in Two New Big Chaps!


More and more natural grass sports pitches and amenity ground works are being carried out by Smith’s, often in conjunction with their synthetic sports surface projects. 2008 has seen an increased demand for a “one stop” solution for new sportsfield developments

When Smiths’ were asked to design and build all of the natural grass sports pitches, spanning an area of 40,000M2, at the same time as a full-size 3G football pitch at Newcastle College, the company’s Managing Director, Ken Smith decided it was the right time to take on two more big chaps; they are Earth moving machines !

One of the monster machines, a Caterpillar 725, 25-tonne Articulated Dump Truck can transport 1,000 tonnes of earth every day! making light work of any large earth moving task.

The other newcomer, a JCB JS210, 21-tonne 360’ Tracked Excavator joins a fleet which already includes three large, and eight medium excavators, along with four large Hydraulic, Laser Controlled Dozers.

Improvements in efficiency are always being sought for customers and the benefit of having this type of plant and machinery is the time it saves when building a natural or synthetic grass pitch.
